A half century ago, our neighborhood was home to a thriving performance art movement, where theaters, opera houses and concert halls sprang up to showcase an unconventional, cutting-edge artistic crusade. Among them, Gypsy Rose Lee was the Renaissance woman behind “February House,” opened as a boarding house in the early 1940s for writers, poets and performers to inhabit as a bohemian enclave. Today, all these years later, an everyday artistic movement is still very much alive here, beckoning.
